6 reasons to visit Cape Town | Private jet charter
As South Africa moves into spring the days are becoming warmer and longer, making it an ideal destination. Cape Town has multiple attractions to suit all tastes and ages. Here are six must-see Cape Town attractions:
Table Mountain
Table Mountain is the symbol of Cape Town. Rising up a majestic 1,085m, the mega-mountain provides an awe-inspiring backdrop for South Africa’s second largest city. Take the revolving Table Mountain Cableway up a lofty 3,500ft in just five minutes for the best views of Cape Town and out over to Robben Island and the Peninsula. The walks on the summit are covered in fynbos, the native flora, and you might also spot an eagle or a marmot.
Robben Island
Nelson Mandela (aka Madiba) was incarcerated for 27 years in the prison on Robben Island – a desolate outcrop few miles offshore. You can visit his tiny cell on a guided tour hosted by a former inmate. A visit here is a moving and inspiring experience that connects visitors to Madiba’s indomitable spirit. Walk around the prison yard and down to the rocky shoreline. The view across the waters to Cape Town is as sobering as it is beautiful. Catch the ferry from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront.
V&A Waterfront
The V&A Waterfront is a destination in its own right, with 450 retail stores, two Aquariums and the Watershed (Cape Town’s premier arts and crafts shop). There are upscale hotels, boutiques and restaurants, food markets and museums to enjoy. The ferry to Robben Island leaves from here, as well as cruise boat tours. The V&A Waterfront is also home to 22 historical monuments and the first 4DX cinema in Africa. The new Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) opens in September.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden
Located 13km from the centre of Cape Town, on the slopes of the majestic Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch is an extraordinary experience. Walk through the fragrance and medicinal gardens with around 25,000 plant species. There’s a protea garden, a braille trail and treehouse walk. The fynbos is at its most spectacular between August and November.
South Africa’s Cape Winelands
South Africa’s Cape Winelands produce some of the best vino in the world. So a wine tour out of Cape Town is a must during your visit. Visit famous names such as Constantia, Franschhoek and Paarl, some of the best wines on earth.
The drive from Cape Town to the wineland areas of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl takes around 45 minutes. La Petite Ferme in Franschhoek is in a class of its own with luxury accommodation and superb cuisine.
Cape Point and the Flying Dutchman Funicular
Take a day to discover Cape Point with a drive from Cape Town via Hout Bay, Chapman’s Peak, Boulder Beach – with the delightful penguins – via Simonstown and Muizenberg to Cape Point. The Cape is part of the famous Cape of Good Hope and there’s a souvenir shop, restaurant, two lighthouses, as well as fishing and dive sites. The Flying Dutchman funicular travels on a railroad on Cape Point towards the upper lighthouse where you’ll enjoy spectacular views, especially at sunrise and sunset.
