Antwerp – the Fashion Capital of Belgium
For our third instalment of Belgium month we are travelling to Belgium’s ‘second city’, Antwerp. Antwerp is home to the biggest port and population in the country. Much like nearby Bruges, Antwerp is a beautiful, stylish and exciting destination to visit, perfect for art, fashion or diamond lovers and big shoppers. This quaint city is the perfect place for a luxury getaway.
Admire the Architecture
In the 16th century Antwerp was one of the most important cities in Europe, and there is evidence of money, power and importance throughout the city to this day. There is a beautiful medieval heart, plenty of adorable cobbled streets and some truly magnificent architecture for you to explore.
Be sure to visit The Cathedral of Our Lady with its imposing Gothic façade, the Museum Plantin-Moretus which has UNESCO World Heritage Status, St Carolus Borromeuskerk, Stadhuis and Paleis op de Meir.
Awaken Your Inner Fashionista
Antwerp is known by many as the most fashionable and stylish city in Belgium and shopping is almost an obligatory pursuit here. In the heart of the city you’ll find shopping mall Stadsfeestzaal and the surrounding streets lined with elegant boutiques and designer shops. The centre of Antwerp’s Belgian fashion scene can be found at The Nationalestraat, a street lined with Belgian flagship stores, designer shops and many independent boutiques. It’s the perfect place to pick up some new clothes and accessories!
The city is so wonderfully chic that it’s also home to the ModeMuseum (commonly known as MoMu) Fashion Museum where you can visit after you’ve exhausted the shops themselves. The museum opened its doors in 2002 and collects, conserves, studies and exhibits Belgian fashion in all its glory. They feature the pieces from many fantastic Belgian contemporary fashion designers and have continually changing theme exhibitions.
Be Dazzled by the Diamond District
Around 70% of all the world’s diamonds are traded through Antwerp, making it the ideal place to pick up some gorgeous new jewellery. Skip the sellers near to the train station and instead head to the so-called Diamond District around Hoveniersstraat and Schapstraat where you’ll find plenty of stores with incredible pieces to catch your eye.
The city also has its own Diamond Museum, the Diamantmuseum, the largest museum of its kind in the world. Here you can learn everything about diamonds, their origins, their colour, clarity and much more.
Stay Somewhere Different and Fabulous
Antwerp is the type of city that isn’t filled to the brim with luxury 5 star hotels from recognized household names. Instead, it excels at having small independent hotels that have all of the amenities a discerning traveller could require, with none of the identikit rooms and suites found across the globe. Search out a hotel that’s something a little different from what you would normally go for – you might just find you love it!
Arrive In Style
Travel to Belgium’s most fashionable city in true style by hiring a private jet with Chapman Freeborn. Charter a private jet to Antwerp and arrive or depart from Antwerp International Airport, Brussels Airport or Eindhoven Airport.
