Five unmissable European Christmas markets in 2018
Christmas markets are a wonderful way to celebrate the beginning of the festive season. As well as providing unique Christmas gift inspiration, they are also a source of fabulous festive food and drink. Here are five unmissable European Christmas markets.
Innsbruck, Austria
Head to Innsbruck’s Old Town this year and indulge in the festive stalls located in and around the medieval quarter near the famous Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof). Wander among the 70 stalls and admire the crafts and Christmas decorations while being serenaded by Austrian brass bands playing traditional festive tunes. The streets around Kiebachgasse become a fairy-tale grotto with characters featured in the shop windows and gables.
Munich, Germany
Head to the Bavarian capital for a truly romantic celebration of Christmas. The famous Christmas tree in Marienplatz in front of the town hall is lit by thousands of bulbs and surrounded by festive candles. Walk among the traditional Bavarian stalls over an area of 20,000 square metres, each selling a selection of local crafts, wines, beers, cakes, chestnuts, herb liqueurs and much more. Try one of the delicious dried fruit and nut figures ‘Zwetschgenmandl’ as you decide which gifts to buy.
Stockholm, Sweden
If you’re looking for a snow-covered Christmas market experience, then Stockholm is guaranteed to deliver. Sweden’s capital has a pretty old town where the stalls and streets are decorated with festive lights and garlands. There are many Christmas markets in the city but the main market is held in Stortorget Square. You’ll find traditional Swedish meatballs, sweets, pear cider and other local treats as well as a selection of arts and crafts.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Head to the stunning Dalmatian coast for the charming Dubrovnik Christmas market. This Game of Thrones backdrop looks especially inviting during the festive season when the city’s landmarks and heritage sites are illuminated. The main market stalls are located on Stradun – a long street that runs through the centre of the old fortified part of the city. There’s a huge selection of Christmas gift ideas alongside delicious Croatian food – arancini and kontonjata to name just two.
Bath, UK
Bath Christmas market sited in front of the city’s beautiful cathedral is an 18-day smorgasbord of live music, mulled wine, Christmas decorations, jewellery and other crafts from local designers, all spread out over 180 festive stalls. Make a weekend of it with a visit to Bath’s other attractions such as the Jane Austen Museum, the Theatre Royal, Royal Crescent and the rejuvenating Thermae Bath Spa complex.
