Intermodal South America 2014: Optimism in the air ahead of annual cargo showcase
We’re now less than a fortnight away from the start of Intermodal South America 2014 – one of the cargo industry’s largest trade gatherings.
The São Paulo-based event will give cargo professionals the opportunity to discuss some of the key issues facing the sector in Brazil and South America – including ongoing infrastructure challenges, changing security regulations, and government tax initiatives designed to stimulate the market.
Following years of meteoric growth, Brazil’s economy has been on something of a roller coaster ride recently, leading some to question whether or not the country would ever reach its potential as a key global cargo market.
However, with the economy once again showing signs of life, there are plenty of reasons for cargo professionals to be optimistic about the long term outlook.
The underlying reasons why Brazil was such an attractive investment proposition in the first place still remain – including its rich natural resources and booming O&G sector (an industry with significant requirements for project cargo, outsize movements and time-critical shipments).
From biotechnology to electronic components, other industries are also going from strength to strength. It was recently reported that car exports out of Brazil rose an impressive 26.5% in 2013. The country is currently the world’s fourth largest car market and seventh largest producer – and more manufacturers are looking to shift operations to the emerging economy in the near future.
In the short term, this summer’s World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics are also proving to be a catalyst for major infrastructure projects in Brazil – including upgrades to airports, roads and rail systems.
Outside of Brazil, other emerging South American markets like Chile, Argentina and Colombia also provide diverse opportunities for logistics firms looking for growth.
