The Venice of the East – Osaka, Japan | Private jet charter

Osaka Japan, also known as the ‘Venice of the East’ thanks to its extensive waterways, canals, and network of bridges. A thoroughly modern city, Osaka has a rich historical legacy alongside its many galleries, museums and eclectic restaurant scene.

Osaka Castle

Built in 1586, Osaka Castle was once the most impressive in Japan. Destroyed several times in battles, the castle was completely reconstructed in 1931. There’s a fascinating museum in the main tower that also provides panoramic views over Osaka.

Universal Studios Japan

One of Japan’s most popular tourist destinations, Universal Studios Japan welcomes over 10 million visitors a year. As well as international rides, there are Japanese-themed rides in the Universal Cool Japan area. Get a Universal Express Pass in advance to avoid spending more time in the queue than on the rides.

Umeda Sky Building

As well as its rich historical legacy, Osaka has an eclectic collection of modern architecture. The most popular is the Unmeda Sky Building (Umeda Sukai Biru): two massive office towers connected at the top by a giant platform. Take the lift and escalators to the top for 170m-high views across Osaka from the rooftop observatory and garden. There is more greenery at ground level with fountains, ponds and walkways – and below ground there’s a fascinating reconstruction of an early 20th-century Osaka market.

Tennōji Park

Osaka’s green lung is Tennōji Park (Tennōji Kōen), which attracts tourists and locals alike who appreciate the beautiful plantings and the cherry blossom in spring. As you’d expect with any Japanese garden the Zen-inspired layout includes ponds, bridges and sculptures all in harmonious flow. The Tennōji Zoo is based here with a collection of African and other wildlife. Join a free tour of the greenhouses and other behind-the-scenes areas.

Osaka Science Museum

Osaka is renowned for its world-class museums. The ship-like structure that is home to the Osaka Science Museum makes a perfect outing for children. It actually sits above the National Museum of Art and offers a variety of interactive exhibits including energy and astronomy (there’s a planetarium here too).
