Port Elizabeth: The Sunshine City

Located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, Port Elizabeth stretches for more than 15 kilometres along picturesque Algoa Bay. The city is known to many as the ‘friendly city’ and is a great place to meet welcoming people and explore all that this area of South Africa has to offer.

Beautiful beaches

Port Elizabeth is located at the end of the world-famous Garden Route and stretches out along miles and miles of pristine beaches and coastline. Don’t miss a visit to Humewood Beach, Kings Beach, Hobie Beach and Pollock Beach. These are just some of the incredible beaches in this area, including an amazing 36 Blue Flag Beaches.

Be sure to take a walk along the 5 kilometre stretch of beachfront promenade in the city, where you’ll find plenty of people out walking, jogging, cycling and enjoying the gorgeous natural scenery.

Soak up the sunshine

Port Elizabeth enjoys an astonishing 300 days of sunshine each year. This is more than any other area in South Africa, so if it’s sunshine you’re seeking this is the perfect place to find it.

In the heat of summer, you’ll be cooled by the winds blowing off the Southern Indian Ocean. Port Elizabeth is often referred to as ‘the windy city’ thanks to the strong winds that keep the city cool in summer and allow visitors to explore all that the area has to offer without overheating under the African sun.

Admire the art

Port Elizabeth is home to some extremely creative people and in recent years art has become a huge part of life here. Route 67 is a collection of public art works symbolising the 67 years Nelson Mandela fought for freedom for the country. These are dotted throughout the city and are a great way to dip into the art of Port Elizabeth.

Those who are interested in street art should make their way to the gallery district and outdoor gallery of street art in the Central and Humewood districts. You’ll find plenty of works created by individuals and collectives who paint colourful, thought-provoking murals.

Day safari

Close to Port Elizabeth there are several different fantastic nature reserves where you can have the opportunity to try to spot the Big Five – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros.

It is easy to hire a car during your time in Port Elizabeth and drive to any of the nearby reserves yourself, or there are also plenty of companies who offer this service.
