Private jet charter to Lima, Peru

Lima, the capital of Peru, is much more than a transit point for a visit to Machu Picchu. This vibrant coastal city – home to more than 9.5 million – offers visitors outstanding Colonial-style architecture, superb cuisine, great surfing beaches, five-star hotels, eclectic shopping, and a multitude of ancient sites to explore.

Here are 5 reasons to visit this intriguing capital city.

Miraflores

Miraflores is the top tourist district in Lima. Its superb cliff-top location means views from the local hotels are incredible. Larcomar, one of Lima’s largest shopping centres is here – perched on the cliff top. There are also cinemas, cafes, discos and an intriguing public park with free Wi-Fi. Watch the paragliders as they swoop down across the Costa Verde over Larcomar. The ancient adobe and clay pyramid of Huaca Pucllana is in Miraflores and a little way south you’ll find the huge temple complex of Pachacamac built in 800 BCE.

Barranco

The cliff-top trendy suburb of Barranco is located 5 minutes south of Lima city centre. A Bohemian enclave of restaurants and galleries, it’s a popular hangout for locals as well as tourists. Many of the Art Deco houses are being restored and a visit to the church of La Ermita, dilapidated but enigmatic, is a must. Recommended bars include the Posada del Mirador overlooking the Pacific, Posada del Angel and Chala. Contemporary cool galleries include the Lucia de la Puente art gallery and Second Home, which has great art and is also an upscale B&B.

Plaza de Armas

Once the heartbeat of the old Colonial city of Lima, you’ll find beautiful monuments and buildings here, including the Archbishop’s Palace, the Cathedral of Lima and the Government Palace. A peaceful walk through the Monastery of San Francisco will charge your batteries and end your walk with an ice cream at the Love Park and enjoy the stunning sunset views over the Pacific Ocean.

Best Lima Restaurants

Peru is best known for ceviche (raw seafood) and pisco sours, but there’s so much more to Peruvian cuisine. Blending techniques and flavours from a smorgasbord of international influences (Creole, Spanish, African and Japanese to name a few) Lima has some of the best restaurants in Peru. Try Chala for Peruvian coast-Mediterranean fusion; ceviche to die for are at Segundo Muelle and La Mar. Malabar is another restaurant to tickle those taste buds, while Kamcha is proud of its Andean cuisine. For lovers of Japanese-Peruvian fusion book a table at Niqei.

Trips out of Lima – Huacachina and Nazca Lines

The desert oasis of Huacachina, around 300km south of Lima is one of Peru’s best-kept secrets. This sheltered, palm-fringed lagoon lies in the middle of a sand dune oasis – perfect for off-road adventure in Mad Max-style buggies, or a spot of sandboarding. Stay at one of the low-rise hotels around the lagoon, enjoy the great food and kick back and relax.

Nazca lines – whether they were created by locals as a landing site for alien craft, or purely for their own amusement, the geoglyphs in the desert at Nazca are extraordinary. Best seen by plane, you can book a Nazca excursion from most hotels in Huacachina and combine the two trips into a fabulously fun long weekend.
