Summer Travel Destinations | Scotland
With the official start to summer on 21st June, many people are turning their thoughts to summer holiday destinations and travel planning. If you need some travel inspiration for this summer, over the next few weeks we’re revealing some superb summer holiday destinations.
Summer can be the perfect time of year to visit Scotland and experience all this country has to offer. Visiting in the summer months means you’ll have the best chance of avoiding rain and will get to enjoy some sunshine and warmer temperatures. Be sure to pack a jacket though – the weather changes quickly in Scotland and it frequently experiences four seasons in one day!
Natural beauty
Scotland has some of the most gorgeous, natural landscapes in the world. From the rugged highlands to the gentle lowlands, it can seem as though there are jaw dropping views at every turn. This makes Scotland an ideal place for those who love to get out and about in nature, whether it is walking, hiking, mountain climbing, biking or just admiring the views with a refreshing drink in hand.
You might be surprised to learn that Scotland has some of the very best beaches in Europe. Some of the finest beaches are Luskentyre Beach, West Sands in St Andrews, Luce Bay, Sands of Morar and Sandwood Bay, which can only be reached by walking four miles and as such is wonderfully peaceful.
Great cities
If city breaks are more your thing, Scotland won’t disappoint on this front. There are seven cities in the country – Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Perth and Stirling – and each one has something different to offer visitors.
The two most popular cities in Scotland for visitors are Glasgow and the capital, Edinburgh. Glasgow is gritty and full of character, with a fantastic food and drinks scene and plenty of chic spots to eat, drink and relax.
Edinburgh is a classically beautiful city, with charm and history all around, from the imposing figure of Edinburgh Castle to the views across the city from atop leafy Arthur’s Seat. August is a great month to visit Edinburgh as this is when the world-famous Fringe Festival takes place. Thousands of arts and creative shows open across the city and people travel from across the globe to experience it.
Castle hotels
With so many years of history, it’s not surprising that Scotland is peppered with thousands of castles, many of which are now luxury hotels. For five star indulgence choose Fonab Castle Hotel, Glenapp Castle, Ackergill Tower Castle, Inverlochy Castle Hotel, Balfour Castle or the newly refurbished Crossbasket Castle. Check in and enjoy feeling like a prince or princess during your stay!
