From street markets to high-end department stores, Oslo offers visitors an array of retail therapy. The city’s most famous – and largest – shopping street is the Bogstadveien with more than 300 shops, as well as restaurants and bars. The area also has a monthly farmer’s market at Vibesgate and twice a year Bogstadveien is closed off to traffic for its famous market. More luxury labels are found in downtown Paleet – a mall with 30 shops located on Karl Johans gate.
Oslo Royal Palace
Home to Norway’s royal family, the Royal Palace was completed in 1825 and located on a hill, the Bellevue, on Karl Johans gate. Although now owned by the State, it’s the official administrative seat of the monarchy and has a staggering 173 rooms – many in use by members of the Royal Court.
Nordic artist Edvard Munch is best known for his expressionist work (most notably The Scream). A pioneer of the Symbolist movement he experimented with many art forms in addition to painting, including drawing, sculpture, film and photography. He bequeathed this unique collection to his home city consisting of paintings, graphical prints and drawings. Designed by architects Einar Myklebust and Gunnar Fougner, the Munch Museum is open every day of the week from 10am to 4pm.
