Vienna | Austria’s historic capital

Located on the River Danube in north-east Austria, majestic Vienna offers visitors sublime architecture, fabulous café culture, breathtaking palaces, superb dining and excellent hotels. The Austrian capital boasts more than 100 museums, beautiful parks and gardens, alongside world-class concert venues and galleries. A cultural destination par excellence, Vienna celebrates art, music, film and dance with regular festivals and exhibitions.

Vienna Sightseeing

Follow the Imperial Habsburg dynasty – With visits to the Baroque palaces of Schönbrunn (Empress Sissi’s former summer residence) and the Belvedere (home to Klimt’s The Kiss). Tiergarten Schönbrunn (aka Vienna Zoo) is located in the grounds of Schönbrunn and is the world’s oldest surviving zoo – don’t miss the gorgeous baby pandas.

Walk along the Ringstrasse – This beautiful tree-lined boulevard is home to the Hofburg Imperial Palace and the Sisi Museum, as well as several magnificent mansions. Alternatively, catch the non-stop Vienna Ring Tram that laps the Ringstrasse every half hour from Schwedenplatz. The loop takes 25 minutes.

Spanish Riding School – Watch the talented Lippizan riders and horses practice their routines. Guided tours include visits to the stables.

St Stephen’s Cathedral (Stefansdom) – A stunning Gothic structure that’s arguably the symbol of Vienna. Climb up 343 steps into the tower for breathtaking views.

The State Opera – Buy a ticket for a performance or a tour – the architecture and interiors here are incredible.

Vienna Coffeehouses

Renowned for its café (and cake!) culture, Vienna coffeehouses may be tourist bait but they are unmissable. Enjoy the ‘gemutlichkeit’ in these beautifully restored period buildings that hark back to a more refined era – now protected by UNESCO. You’ll find Sachertorte, apple strudel, Bundt cake, Kaiserschmarren and more in these Old City favourites: Café Museum, Café Mozart, Café Central, Café Bellaria, Demel K, Café Hawelka, Café Hofburg, Café Landtmann and Café Imperial.

Vienna Shopping

From luxury brands to flea markets, antique shops to trendy boutiques, Vienna has an eclectic shopping scene to suit every taste. The Goldenes Quartier (between the Kohlmarket and Kärntner Strasse) in Vienna’s Old City boasts flagship stores from Louis Vuitton, Armani, Prada, Miu Miu, Alexander McQueen and many more. Vienna’s finest traditional jewellers are also here: Schullin, Wagner and Bucherer in addition to luxe international brands such as Cartier, Chopard and Tiffany.

Vienna Wining and Dining

Organic restaurants, haute cuisine, Michelin-starred establishments, secret gardens and bistros, the Viennese restaurant scene is thriving – and you’ll get more than just Austro-Hungarian favourites.

Michelin gastronomes will want to head for Steirereck at the Stadtpark with its 2 Stars and 4 Gault Millau toques to sample the best in Austrian cuisine from Heinz Reitbauer. Vegetarians in search of haute nosh are recommended to visit TIAN, an upmarket veggie restaurant and wine bar. Chef Paul Ivić has earned his 1 Michelin star in this exquisite temple to meat-free dining. Restaurant Anna Sacher, helmed by Chef Dominik Stolzer provides another source of excellent Austrian cuisine, while lovers of Italian food will enjoy trendy Fabios – apparently a popular celebrity haunt.
