A city with more than a thousand years of history, Grosseto’s airport is a mere 3 kilometres from the centre. Your private jet hire will touch down on one of two runways where you’ll be met by your private driver and head off towards this Tuscan gem.
The provincial capital of Tuscany’s Maremma region, Grosseto is 14km from the coast and a city that remains a hidden treasure, frequently overlooked by tourists. But their loss is your gain, with its beautiful central square, high-end accommodation, and fabulous restaurants.
And where to stay? You must check into the L’Andana Tenuta La Badiola, 20km outside the city. A sprawling estate in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, experience the luxury of a suite and the sumptuous onsite restaurants offering the best in local produce with a touch of Italian sophistication.
In Grosseto itself, dining out is a pleasure. If you’re a seafood fan, book a table at Ponti di Badia. Enjoy the outside seating on a warm summer’s evening with perfectly cooked pasta or a plate from the restaurant’s pizzeria.
For a Michelin Guide dining experience, head to Canapone, serving modern Italian cuisine in the heart of the city.
In terms of attractions, Grosseto is the perfect place for strolling around, taking in the architecture and indulging in some museum hopping. The Dante Alighieri square offers a mock medieval space where you’ll find the Cathedral San Lorenzo, which was remodelled entirely in the mid-19th Century.
While much of the cathedral has been rebuilt, inside you’ll find some of the original glass windows from the 1400s, along with the intricately carved baptismal font and painting of the Madonna delle Grazia painted in 1470 by Matteo di Giovanni.
Outside the square, you’ll find the 2.9km city wall which has been transformed into a pleasant walkway with gates dating back to the 15th century.
Grosseto enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with mild wet winters and very hot, dry summers. Throughout July and August temperatures peak at 40°C, remaining pleasantly warm in October and November. February too is an ideal time to visit, out of the intensity of the summer heat but still warm enough to enjoy being outside.
While many overlook Grosseto as a destination, it’s the perfect place to enjoy the very best in Italian food and wine. A short hop from anywhere in Europe, it’s ideally situated to book a charter plane and explore this Tuscan delight away from the crowds of Rome and Florence.
