Nestled on the southern tip of Sweden, overlooking the Øresund Strait which divides the country from Denmark, lies the vibrant city of Malmö. With its rich history, modern architecture, and diverse cultural scene, Malmö offers visitors a captivating blend of old-world charm and contemporary flair. Your private jet charter could land at Malmo Airport, but the closest airport to the city centre for your private charter is actually Copenhagen Airport in nearby Denmark. It’s then just a 40-minute drive, or train journey, across the famous Øresund Bridge between the two countries to the Scandic Kramer hotel.
Housed in a historic turreted building, the rooms boast contemporary flair and views of the nearby square. The hotel’s eateries are similarly polarised – enjoy the cosy, dark wood carved pillars in the ground floor bar, or dine on buttery scallops with collard greens and a carrot puree, or tender beef medallions with a silky pepper sauce, in the bright, sunny conservatory.
MJs is a younger and hipper place to stay, near the pedestrian street which leads up to Lilla Torg – the epicentre of Malmö’s nightlife. The renovated hotel has a central glass roof atrium decorated with ivy and flowers, where the breakfast buffet and dinner menu are served.
The Clarion Hotel Malmö Live has the best views in town, housed in a 25-storey skyscraper that locals jokingly have named ‘Malmhattan’. The 444-room hotel, which was designed by architecture firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen and opened to the public in 2015, doubles as a concert and conference hall and is home to Malmö Symphony Orchestra. The hotel has a sky bar and two restaurants by Swedish chef Marcus Samuelsson.
Outside the hotel, the intimate Vollmers restaurant has a young team providing cheerful service on a cobbled street in the city’s Old Town. The sophisticated menu is inspired by the owners’ childhood memories. To enjoy colourful, vibrant food from a former Swedish MasterChef winner, try Namu. Namu blends Korean flavours with a Scandinavian touch such as locally caught mussels with caramelised green onions, gochugaru and XO sauce.
For classic Swedish dishes, Västergatan is an unpretentious modern bistro. A regularly-changing set menu offers fresh seasonal dishes using the best of Swedish produce such as meatballs with lingonberry sauce, and freshly caught seafood.
If you’re in the mood for an exciting wine from a small-scale producer after your meal, or a cocktail with many of the ingredients picked in Malmö gardens, try BISe. It’s a restaurant, wine bar and cocktail bar – called Bar Bisou – under the same roof, serving drinks such as the Lilla Martinin which blends fermented passion fruit with vanilla, gin, grappa and olive oil
You can experience Malmö in the daytime with a guided boat tour of its picturesque canals, while learning about the city’s history, architecture and waterfront landmarks. Stroll along the sandy shores of Ribersborg Beach, renowned for its views of the city’s famous bridge and a seawater bathhouse on a pier, or visit Kungsparken, a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city, where lush greenery and serene ponds offer a peaceful retreat from the urban bustle.
Tuck into some Swedish fika if you’ve worked up an appetite – the tradition of coffee and cake – with some cinnamon buns at one of the cobbled Old Town’s quaint cafes. Malmö starts warming up in May, so the best time to book your international charter flight to enjoy Sweden’s outdoor attractions is June to September. But whether you want to make the most of Malmö’s beaches and canals, or huddle up with coffee and cake in a candlelit cafe, the city has plenty to offer all year round.
