Rio de Janeiro | The Marvelous City

There are many reasons why Rio de Janeiro is referred to as the Cidade Maravilhosa, the Marvelous City. It is a place that is undeniably beautiful, has a fascinating history, some of the best nightlife in South America and definitely doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Beauty and beaches

It’s not unusual for visitors to fall head over heels for Rio de Janeiro. Its position surrounded by mountains, golden beaches and patches of lush rainforest is enviable, and earned part of the city a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 2012. Looking out to sea you’ll see a number of islands dotted along the coastline, further adding to the picture-perfect landscape.

Within the city there are some of the world’s most famous and best beaches, including Copacabana and Ipanema. Aside from these two household names, there are many other, quieter spots if you want to relax on the sands. Try out Prainha Beach, Barra de Tijuca Beach, Praia Vermehla and Ilha Grande.

Get the best views

There are many places to head to in Rio for stunning views of its magical landscape. However, few can rival the view from Dois Irmaos (the Two Brothers) mountain, which overlooks Ipanema Beach and out to the Atlantic Ocean.

Other great views can be enjoyed from the top of Pedra da Gavea, Bico do Papagaio, Morro do Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf Mountain) and Christ the Redeemer.

Enjoy the nightlife

The nightlife in Rio is unrivalled and there are places to enjoy it all across the city. Head to the Pedra do Sal where there are weekly samba performances and a real party atmosphere, with people spilling out onto the street, dancing and enjoying the music.

If you fancy something a little more relaxed, then head to the Urca peninsula where people congregate outside, especially at the weekend, to relax, enjoy drinks and watch the sun go down.

Be adventurous

Being surrounded by mountains and water means there are plenty of adventurous activities to take part in and around the city. Try hiking, either up one of the mountains or in the Tijuca rainforest, cycle along one of the beachfront promenades or up to the Christ the Redeemer statue, or try out surfing, rock climbing, sailing, paragliding or more.

Stay in luxury

Rio has some fantastic luxury hotels where you can rest your head after a day of sightseeing, or a night of sultry samba. Try out elegant and traditional Belmond Copacabana Palace, which overlooks the gorgeous sands of Copacabana and has been in Rio for more than 90 years. Other great options include the Hotel Santa Teresa MGallery by Sofitel, modern and contemporary Hotel Emiliano or Fasano Rio. Whatever you look for in a hotel, you’ll be able to find it in Rio.
