Curled around the world’s deepest natural harbour, Sydney is a feast for the eyes – as well as all the other senses.
Australia’s largest and busiest city has world-class restaurants. It’s been busy exporting its laidback, brunch-style of eating to the rest of the world for the last decade. Stunning beaches and iconic structures such as Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, add to its universal appeal.
After your private air charter lands at Sydney’s international airport, it’s just 8km (or a 25-minute drive) to the city centre.
You could drive to Crown Towers – Sydney’s only six-star hotel and known as the most luxurious in Australia. It boasts an infinity pool overlooking the sweep of the harbour (as well as private cabanas which boast a safe, cheeseboard and minibar), a swanky spa and no less than 14 bars and restaurants in a ‘dining precinct’, including Clare Smyth’s Oncore – the new outpost of her Notting Hill restaurant Core – as well as Nobu.
If you’d prefer somewhere with a little more history, the Paramount House Hotel is based in the old Paramount Pictures building in Surry Hills – the city’s most popular dining and drinking area. You can enjoy a crisp martini while you watch a film in the hotel’s Golden Age Cinema and Bar and pre-order a flask of house-brewed filter coffee to be left outside your hotel room door in the morning.
Or take a helicopter straight from the airport when your private jet charter lands to Marramarra Lodge, set in a blissfully bucolic spot on the Hawkesbury River.
The hotel may feel like it’s utterly secluded – and you can only reach it by helicopter, seaplane or boat – but it’s only an hour from Sydney city centre, with luxury safari tents, excursions and picnics along the river, all-inclusive gourmet dining and fabulous spa facilities.
When you leave your hotel, try Saint Peter restaurant, where diners sit at a single long marble counter which winds its way around the room to tuck into the freshest seafood.
Or enjoy stunning views of the water and glitzy Italian fine dining at A’Mare, which boasts squid ink risotto, huge veal cutlets to share, or pesto which is made fresh, table-side.
Chaco Bar offers Japanese ‘nose-to-tail’ eating, with a selection of meats charred perfectly over a robata grill, hay-smoked sashimi or miso-marinated toothfish.
Whisky fans will love Baxter’s Inn, a cosy drinking den which has made the list of the world’s top 50 bars – mostly because of its vast range of more than 800 different whiskies.
Visitors can take a tour of the Opera House or Harbour Bridge, enjoying the 360-degree views from the very top of the bridge, visit the famous Bondi Beach to catch a few waves, or see lush blooms at the Royal Botanic Gardens.
The best time to book your international charter flight for Sydney is September to December, or March to May, avoiding the heat and peak tourist season.
You may not be lucky enough to have a permanent base in Sydney, but you’ll soon discover why so many ex-pats have made it their home.
